Wei Yi Laksa (Tanglin Halt Market)

WeiYi Laksa was featured in the Business Times recently. Here is the article on it:

Wei Yi Laksa & Prawn Noodle Stall 20,
Tanglin Halt Market
Tanglin Halt Road
Tel: 9782-1012
Open 5.30am to 2pm (closed Monday)

Ngern Jwee Chye appropriated his mother's home recipe for laksa over 20 years ago and then experimented with it for some time before she gave him the okay to start a laksa stall - he hasn't looked back since.

Wei Yi, which means 'only one', has long been a favourite among residents of the Tanglin Halt neighbourhood as well as regulars from other parts of town, but the stall also attracts its fair share of customers from beyond Singapore's borders, according to Mr Ngern, 57, listing Japanese and Austrian tourists among his clientele.

The basic laksa dish features a generous serving of chicken and tau pok (fried bean curd) is priced at $2.50 - a culinary bargain in any currency. There are several other combinations on offer, involving prawns and cockles, but the maximum price is $5. The gravy is less rich and not as heavy as that found in more conventional laksa places, which makes Wei Yi a good breakfast stop.

'You must understand the character of each ingredient, what its origins are - in particular the coconut,' says Mr Ngern, who has a penchant for wearing baseball caps backwards and who obviously takes great pride in his product. For good measure, he also offers a decent bowl of prawn noodles, but admits it has yet to reach the heights of his laksa.

Best Laksa and Prawn Noodle in Tanglin Halt Road

Wei Yi Laksa and Prawn Noodle is stall no. 20 at the Tanglin Halt Food Market.

It is superbly good and is also featured on Makansutra in 2007. I am not sure if it is still featured on makansutra 2008 to 2009 as I do not have the latest book.

You should try it.

It is open only in the mornings so you have to get it before lunch =)

Tanglin Halt Food Centre Reopens

AFTER an enforced hiatus since March last year, hawker Ong Choon Chiang will resume dishing up his famous crispy chicken cutlets and butter-soaked French fries from Sunday.

The 65-year-old has been operating No. 1 Western Food at the Tanglin Halt Food Centre since it opened in 1981. But he and the other stallholders at the centre along Commonwealth Drive had to take a break when it was closed 10 months ago for a major facelift under the National Environment Agency's Hawker Centres Upgrading Programme.

Hawkers were allowed to resume business from yesterday, but only around a quarter of the 40 stalls - such as Malay food stall Alimah's Kitchen - were open. The rest will resume over the next few weeks.

Mr Ong had planned to open for business yesterday but his supplier delivered the wrong refrigerator - one meant for vegetables instead of meat.

'Many customers have been calling to ask when I'll open again, and I also can't wait to start,' he said after proudly showing a laminated Jan 23, 2000 Sunday Times review of his stall.

The hawker centre's renovation works cost $2.4 million and included upgrading of toilets, new floor and wall tiles, re-roofing and improvements to lighting.

Tanglin Halt Road Carparking

For those who are parking at Tanglin Halt Road, please note that the traffic wardens are really active in the area.

If you intend to park illegally or save on the carpark coupons, you can be prepared to get a summon.

Don't say that you were not warned.

Tanglin Halt Food Centre to Reopen on 16 Jan

The food centre at Tanglin Halt Road which was closed for renovation will reopen on 16 Jan 10.

I can't wait to see if the western food store will shift back there. It was the only stall that I truly liked out of all the other stalls.

The other stall I guess is the Char Kway Teow Stall.

Tanglin Halt Road Traffic Light

Along Tanglin Halt Road, there is a new traffic light at the zebra crossing.

This has caused lots of confusion for people who have been driving there for a long time as well as pedestrians who were used to the zebra crossing where they had enjoyed their right of way for many years.

I just saw a quarrel took place today. I think the driver almost hit a pedestrian and that was how the quarrel took place.
